The Almighty Hot Comb
Hot combs on little black girls’ hair was a common practice, before we discovered how beautiful our hair is. It was a reflection of the prevailing beauty standards of the time and cultural norms regarding hair care. But for those who grew up during those times, it reflected more than hair. It was also in that kitchen next to the hot stove, that many memories were built. I didn’t grow up with the hot comb, but I do remember my sister hating her hair combed and braided, and the scene often looked just like this.
But after all the fussing was done, many little girls walked out of the house feeling pretty and proud.
